Polis 28

PROF. KEVIN STEVENS

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II STUDIO

The site is located in a part of Knoxville, TN that was destroyed by Urban Renewal during 1959-1974. Polis 28 aims to bring something back to the community and make what was taken away useful to the community once again. The project takes precedent from “The Polis Station” by Studio Gang aiming to reimagine the institution of the Police station and enables the community to interact with the Police station, others in the community and to receive back from the historical destruction of the neighborhood. In this project, the institution of the police station is changed into an entity that interacts and aids the community rather than watching or looming over the community as it is perceived to be currently. Use of transparency and intersecting pathways allow the community to be interactive with the workings of the institution and merge the public with the private. The site in itself is a monument to what was taken away and brings back what was not given to the community. Polis strives to give back to the community in a positive way that benefits everyone and can bring people together no matter their differences to learn, interact and grow together.

The Polis 28 program complex introduces programs to reach everyone in the community including a Hockey Arena, Auditorium, Dog Park, amphitheater, Gardens, Outdoor space, Museum, Spa, Study Rooms, Library, Police Station, Conference rooms, Restaurant, Café, Doctors and Therapy services, classrooms, offices, fitness rooms, daycare, dog daycare, sports bar, game room and free living for those in need.
